Classes Resume at Claremont Hall
After moving to Claremont during the Christmas holidays, classes resumed in January in Claremont Hall (now Sumner Hall).
First Woman Professor
Phebe Estelle Spalding joined the faculty as 鈥渢eacher of English literature, history, and modern languages,鈥 as well as being librarian and dean of women. A recent graduate of Carleton College, she brought with her 200 volumes to add to the 300 that then made up 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023鈥檚 library in Claremont Hall. She would remain a member of the 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023 faculty until her retirement in 1927.
Mondays Off
To remove the temptation for students to study on Sunday, 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023 joined the ranks of Carleton and Wellesley in having Monday rather than Saturday as a holiday.
STUDENT LIFE
First Student Publication
The first edition of the 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023 newspaper, now known as The Student Life, was published in 1889 as the 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023 Student by two literary societies, the 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023 Literary Society and the XYZ, which jointly elected the editors. The first editor was David P. Barrows 1894, a senior in the 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023 Preparatory School (students from the prep school edited the paper until 1892). Barrows, who also was editor during his senior year of college, would go on to become the ninth president of the University of California and a major general in the California National Guard.
In its first year, the 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023 Student was a four-page monthly; the following year it expanded to a 12-page monthly in pamphlet form with a considerable amount of advertising. It was, however, primarily financed by student subscriptions, which were sold for 75 cents per year. In 1892, it was incorporated as the 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023 Student Publishing Company, a venture designed to overcome the difficulties and numerous typos that resulted from working out of the 澳门六合彩开奖结果2023 Progress office, four miles from campus.

Purpose
鈥湴拿帕喜士苯峁2023 aims to give a regular college course simply, leaving professional training to post-graduate schools equipped for that purpose. It requires for admission a course of study substantially identical with the old academies of New England. Its policy is to present but three studies to be taken by any pupil, and the work demanded in each can thus be up to the highest standard without endangering health. It relies upon the patronage of those who know what good work requires. It is a Christian college. Its teachers are appointed with reference to their large personal influence in the formation of character.鈥
