To foreground this commitment to diversity and inclusion, the President's Advisory Council on Diversity has developed “Know YOUR History,” a multi-year series intended to amplify the voices that are often drowned out in the clamor of the dominant narrative. Southward and the West Indies: Colleges and Slavery in the Age of Revolution

This lecture by Craig Steven Wilder, Barton L. Weller Professor of History at MIT, examines the rise of the nation’s oldest colleges out of the slave economies of the Atlantic world. Slave traders and slaveholders founded ten colleges in British America. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, colleges became even more dependent on slavery, and higher education thrived as governors attached their institutions’ fates to that of American slavery.

Immigrant Realities: Know YOUR History

The topic of immigration has often been represented by the media through a single image. Yet, every immigration story is different, and each community has its own reality. This event is an opportunity to hear from a range of immigration histories and engage in activities to concretely support immigrants. The focus of this particular Know YOUR History event is on students. However, and as always, the event is free and open to the public.

"I Am Not Your Negro" Screening and Discussion with Filmmaker Raoul Peck

Peck’s Oscar nominated documentary on James Baldwin is a moving memoir that gives audiences a historical perspective of identity, injustice, deconstruction of white privilege and race in America, while reflecting on the lives of human rights giants: Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Medgar Evers, three African American leaders who were murdered in their prime.

Travis Brown, director of the ��ϲʿ��2023 Quantitative Skills Center, will lead an introduction to acclaimed novelist James Baldwin’s work, featuring a video of the author, a response from April Mayes, associate professor of history, and small group discussions.
